Great work doesn't text back
Most owners get referrals backwards. They think great work brings the next customer in on its own.
Here's a line I heard from a business owner that stuck with me: "I hate chasing people. It makes me feel like a salesman instead of the guy who does the work."
I understand that feeling. But think about what a happy customer does after the job. They mean to tell people. Then life gets busy, and the moment passes. You never even know the referral was there.
Great work doesn't text back. You have to.
I call it the 7-Day Text. One week after the job, while the result is fresh and they're still happy, you send one short message. You thank them, and you ask one thing: "Do you know anyone else who'd want this?"
That isn't chasing. Chasing is asking a stranger for a yes. This is asking a happy customer for a name. And it's a follow-up you can hand to your team or automate, so it still happens on your busiest week.
Try this today: write your 7-Day Text. Two or three sentences, in your own words. Then set a reminder on every job you finish this week.
Tomorrow I'll show you what it looks like when a business stops waiting on word of mouth, with a real client and real numbers.
Do you ask for referrals right now, or wait for them? Be honest.
