𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗔𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗱 — 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝘁

Long posts don't always arrive at a convenient moment. Read Aloud puts a speaker icon into the post header, right next to the bookmark icon: click it and the post is read to you — the title first, then the text. Classroom lessons carry the same icon in their action row, so a written lesson can be listened to instead of read — there too, a folded text is unfolded before it is read out. In the feed the icon sits on every post card alongside the bookmark, so a post can be heard without opening it; both appear only while the mouse is over the card, and stay visible whenever they show a state — a post being read out, a bookmark that is set, a card that was auto-translated.

The voice comes from your browser, so there is nothing to set up and nothing to pay for. Which voices exist depends on your operating system and browser; Read Aloud picks the one matching your Skool Extensions interface language. If the post is still folded behind a "Show more" link, it unfolds first, so you hear the whole thing instead of just the opening.

A second click stops it — while a post is playing, the icon stays green. Moving on to another post ends the playback too, so a post you left behind never talks over the one you are reading now.

Hovering the icon opens a small menu with two settings: speed between 0.75× and 2×, and every voice your system has to offer, grouped by language. The group at the top is the language the text is actually in — the one the community writes in, or, while auto-translation is on for that community, the language it translates into. Your interface language only decides the labels. The groups are collapsed, except the one holding the voice currently in use — a machine with two dozen voices would otherwise fill the whole menu with names you never pick.

Above them sit the cloud voices, a Premium addition. They come from OpenAI instead of your operating system and sound markedly more natural, German included — useful when your machine has no voice for the language at all. They are not tied to a language: each of the six speaks every language, which is why the group is labelled "all languages" rather than sorted like the system voices. A cloud voice has to be fetched before it can play, which takes a moment. Picking a voice stops the current reading straight away and the icon shows a spinning ring until the new voice takes over at the passage you had reached. Each Premium account gets 66,000 tokens a month, one token per character read out, which is roughly forty-five average posts. Listening to the same post again is free and does not count: once a post has been read aloud, its recording is kept and shared, so the second person to play it pays nothing. The counter at the bottom of the menu shows what is left, and it resets at the start of each month. Both take effect right away. Clicking a voice starts reading immediately, and if a post is already playing it carries on at the passage being read rather than starting over — that also holds when switching between a browser voice and a cloud voice. The choice stays on the device you made it on, because which voices exist depends on the machine.

Lange Posts kommen nicht immer zum passenden Moment. „Vorlesen" setzt ein Lautsprecher-Icon in die Post-Kopfzeile, direkt neben das Bookmark-Icon: ein Klick, und der Post wird dir vorgelesen — erst der Titel, dann der Text. In Classroom-Lektionen sitzt dasselbe Icon in der Aktionszeile, eine geschriebene Lektion lässt sich also anhören statt lesen — auch dort wird ein eingeklappter Text vor dem Vorlesen aufgeklappt. Im Feed sitzt das Icon neben dem Bookmark an jeder Post-Karte, ein Post lässt sich also anhören, ohne ihn zu öffnen. Beide erscheinen erst, wenn die Maus über der Karte steht, und bleiben stehen, sobald sie einen Zustand anzeigen: ein laufendes Vorlesen, ein gesetztes Lesezeichen, eine automatisch übersetzte Karte.

Die Stimme kommt aus deinem Browser, es gibt also nichts einzurichten und nichts zu bezahlen. Welche Stimmen es gibt, hängt von deinem Betriebssystem und Browser ab; „Vorlesen" nimmt die, die zu deiner Skool-Extensions-Oberflächensprache passt. Steckt der Post noch hinter einem „Show more"-Link, klappt er vorher auf, damit du den ganzen Text hörst und nicht nur den Anfang.

Ein zweiter Klick stoppt — während ein Post läuft, bleibt das Icon grün. Auch der Wechsel auf einen anderen Post beendet die Ausgabe, damit ein verlassener Post nicht in den hineinredet, den du gerade liest.

Fährst du mit der Maus über das Icon, öffnet sich ein kleines Menü mit zwei Einstellungen: das Tempo zwischen 0,75× und 2× und jede Stimme, die dein System hergibt — nach Sprache gruppiert. Oben steht die Sprache, in der der Text tatsächlich vorliegt: die Sprache der Community, oder bei eingeschalteter Auto-Übersetzung deren Zielsprache. Deine Oberflächensprache bestimmt nur noch die Beschriftungen. Die Gruppen sind zugeklappt, offen ist nur die mit der gerade benutzten Stimme; bei zwei Dutzend Systemstimmen stünde sonst das halbe Menü voller Namen, die du nie auswählst.

Darüber stehen die Cloud-Stimmen, eine Premium-Erweiterung. Sie kommen von OpenAI statt vom Betriebssystem und klingen deutlich natürlicher, auch auf Deutsch — praktisch, wenn auf deinem Rechner gar keine Stimme für die Sprache installiert ist. An eine Sprache sind sie nicht gebunden: Jede der sechs spricht alle Sprachen, deshalb steht an der Gruppe „alle Sprachen" statt einer Sortierung wie bei den Systemstimmen. Eine Cloud-Stimme muss vor dem Abspielen geholt werden, das dauert einen Moment. Eine Stimme auszuwählen beendet das laufende Vorlesen sofort; solange dreht sich ein Ring am Icon, bis die neue Stimme an der erreichten Stelle übernimmt. Pro Premium-Konto gibt es 66.000 Tokens im Monat, ein Token je vorgelesenem Zeichen, also grob fünfundvierzig durchschnittliche Posts. Denselben Post erneut zu hören ist gratis und zählt nicht mit: Was einmal vorgelesen wurde, bleibt gespeichert und wird geteilt — wer als Zweiter auf Abspielen drückt, zahlt nichts. Am Fuß des Menüs steht, wie viel noch übrig ist; zum Monatsanfang gibt es wieder volles Guthaben. Beides greift sofort. Ein Klick auf eine Stimme beginnt direkt zu lesen, und läuft schon ein Post, geht es an der gerade gelesenen Stelle weiter statt von vorn — auch dann, wenn du zwischen einer Browserstimme und einer Cloud-Stimme wechselst. Die Wahl bleibt auf dem Gerät, auf dem du sie triffst, denn welche Stimmen es gibt, hängt am Rechner.
