Third Place Theory
A man should have three places in his life. The first is his home. There is a certain role and expectation that comes with that place. The second is work… This place also has a specified role, with expected behaviors and outcomes. The most important of these from a mental health perspective is the THIRD PLACE. This is the place that you choose to go. A place where there are like minded people, no judgement, little expectations outside just showing up. It is a place where you can let your guard down and relax. Be the person you may not be able to be at your other places. Think Coffee shops, Bars, gyms, CrossFit, Martial Arts Academies, book clubs, etc. The number of third places has declined dramatically over the years and coincides with declines in men’s mental health. Find a third places!!!

Jiujitsu is Linear….
The amount of variables in Jiujitsu can make it seem overwhelming and complicated. Add in the thousands of techniques and variations, and we have created an incredibly intimidating starting point for the new practitioner! I like to make complex things as simple as possible, and I think this is best done by looking at concepts. This is why I describe Jiujitsu as linear. It moves in one direction, and depending on where you are on that line dictates your, or your partners next move. Defend>Escape>Control>Submit, is the direction that Ryron Gracie uses to explain Jiu-Jitsu’s progression. We should never be moving to submit until we have control over our opponent. Likewise we should not try to escape until we are fully defending any potential attacks from our opponent. View Jiujitsu in this linear path and you will realize where you are dictates what action to take!
