We have a new Course coming out soon: How to Build a Table!
Over the next few days, we'll be reviewing all the different aspects to build a table.
Be sure to stay tuned each day for each new step!
But first, why Build instead of Buy?
• High-quality hardwood furniture can last for decades.
• Cheap furniture often fails within a few years.
• Our table, built in 2012, still looks great and is structurally sound. (Honestly, I’d feel safer hidding underneath if an earthquake came!)
• You'll get a great sense of accomplishment!
Building furniture can be so rewarding! Not only is it a fun project, but it can last for generations! If you've ever wanted to build a table, whether as a gathering place for your family to eat, one to put next to your couch, one to work at, etc., this project may seem kind of daunting! I think most people shy away from this type of project because they think they need a lot of big, expensive equipment, or they don't know how to attach all the pieces together. But when you break it down, it's really not too complicated.
When I worked in the Woodworking industry full-time for 12 years, we saw some bad things happen to wood if we didn't build our products correctly. Usually, table tops are made out of solid wood, which will shrink and swell more than particle board or MDF with wood veneers, but it's substantially more durable, which is why it's commonly used. But if correct practices are followed, a table can last for decades.
Attached is a picture of our Dining Room Table. I built it 14 years ago!
We used solid ash wood for everything. We stained the legs and apron to match our kitchen cabinets.
