Bought this truck for my son and painted it yesterday , we have been working on it for about 3 months now. The information I’ve gotten from the course has really helped give me a better understanding painting. Thanks you the tips and advise.

Congrats! That looks great from my screen. I've always been a fan of the OBS trucks, my first truck was a '94. Glad some of the tips helped 😎🔥
Black Widow HTE vs Porphis PRD-817
I watched Aaron's review of the Porphis PRD-817 spray gun recently, and after he got it dialed in, he seemed to like it for clearcoat. I have pretty much zero experience painting. I do have the Black Widow HTE, but I saw some guys on YouTube talking about it laying down material more slowly. My current project is a 1986 F150, and I will be spraying the entire truck and that is a lot of surface area. Since I have a bunch of projects in my future that will need painting, I was wondering would it be worth it to get the PRD-817 to use as a dedicated clear gun? Also, I wonder where Aaron would put it in his rankings of guns he's used. I know he really like the Black Widow HTE. Should I just stick with that? Thoughts, anyone?

Interesting question! Two things come to mind. The Black Widow is an excellent gun, but it’s not the most efficient. It’ll absolutely go up against the best of them, but similar to the SATA 5000/5500, you really need a decent amount of exhaust airflow in your space to get phenomenal results. I’d describe the Black Widow as almost a hybrid between a DeVilbiss GTi ProLite with a 1.3mm tip/T110 air cap and a WS400. The PRD-817 leans more toward the characteristics of a WS400, with a massive fan pattern and excellent atomization. The key is that you need to reduce the fluid flow through the gun by roughly half to really make it sing.I run the fan pattern completely open and about 1.4 bar (~20 PSI) at the inlet. I’ve been really happy with the results I’ve gotten from it. That said, Porphis also sent me their newer PRD-725, which I’m currently working on a video about. So I’ll have some more thoughts on that one soon. If you do get the itch to try one of their guns, they've given me a code - makeitmatch - that you can use at checkout for 5% off. I’m not trying to push their products though. At the end of the day, an older ProLite, and plenty of other guns, can produce absolutely phenomenal results as well. Just my two cents!
Paint cracking at roof/quarter panel junction
So I restored my 1973 Mach 1 in 2020-2021, and the guys who did the paint did a really nice job. The roof panel and both quarters were replaced, and the joint was welded solid. The joint that had originally been filled with lead was filled with long-strand fiberglass filler that was covered with a layer of short-strand fiberglass filler and finally Rage Ultra body filler. The passenger side is perfect. The driver side started showing the outline of the joint late last fall, and now has progressed to cracking the paint. I know that I will have to sand it down and grind it out to get to the root of the problem and correct it. My question is, after I repair the problem, and blend out the panel(s), will I have to blend the entire roof and both quarters together? I have heard that only clearing the repainted areas will allow the transitions to show up in some lighting conditions. If I have to scuff and reclear the roof and both quarters I will, I just want to confirm that that is what I'll have to do. Thanks in advance.

I've been thinking a lot about this - it's a tricky area. One thought - when the roof panel and quarter panels were replaced, how large were the plug weld holes and did the new panels get welded all the way to the inner structure? The metal there should be three or four layers thick if my memory serves me right. I wonder that joint is moving around more than it should?

That's good news at least, I was thinking perhaps the outer quarter and roof skin might have come detached from the structure behind it. Still, not a fun re-do, the only thing worse is having to re-do drip rails where the seam sealer cracked. It certainly could be poor adhesion. I think the more modern approach (likely with better results) would be to apply a few coats of epoxy primer over the bare metal (cleaned properly) at 80-120 grit, let that cure for a few days, and then come back and sand it with no finer than 180 grit, clean, and apply filler to the epoxy. Then, you get the best of both worlds - corrosion protection, chemical and mechanical adhesion to the metal. Either way, I'd definitely blend the basecoat out into the roof and down the rear pillars of the mustang, and then re-clear both quarters, the rear deck filler panel, and the roof all at once.
Alternative Paint Storage?
As I was progressing through the safety lesson pertaining to paint storage, it mentioned a metal fire proof cabinet as the preferred option. I agree this is a great option, but for the hobbyist, those can be quite the investment… I wanted to share a dirt-cheap alternative that I’m using. Would love everyone’s thoughts. If there’s something I’m overlooking… I want to be safe, and will gladly spend the $ if it’s needed- it’s a lot cheaper than replacing a house or shop. I use an old retired refrigerator, it’s insulated so the temperature is stabilized, and would certainly protect from fires. It has a self-closing door, and would also contain spills.

Not a bad idea! One other idea is buying one used from government surplus. I actually found mine at a local habitat for humanity, but govdeals usually has quite a few up for action at any given time. Sometimes you have to be creative with search terms to find them, like use the words 'safety storage cabinet' or the like to get more results.
