ADHD and Goalkeeping
I often see posts that state the GK has ADHD, and talk of the struggle or effect poor coaching has/had. Ive written a short article on my view regarding this, as a coach. ADHD can have both challenges and potential advantages for goalkeepers. It is important not to assume every goalkeeper with ADHD will experience the same effects, as ADHD presents differently between individuals. Also ADHD doesn't automatically make someone a better or worse goalkeeper. In the right environment, characteristics such as energy, creativity, rapid responses and intense engagement can potentially become strengths. However, difficulties with attention, impulsivity and emotional regulation may require specific coaching strategies. I firmly believe that the modern day coach SHOULD definately have a good understanding of the subject and MUST be prepared to LEARN ADAPT to each players needs in order to get the best from them. Firstly ive broken down the effects of the diversity into 2 simple catagories positives and negatives. Obviously this is a blanket opinion and can in no way "umbrella" everyone.... Potential positives: -High energy and intensity – the fast-paced, reactive nature of goalkeeping can provide an outlet for physical energy. -Quick reactions – some players may respond very well to rapidly changing situations and unexpected events. -Creativity and spontaneity – thinking differently can help with improvisation, distribution and problem-solving situations that occour in footbal -Hyperfocus – when highly engaged in an activity, some individuals with ADHD can become extremely focused and absorbed in it. -Resilience and determination – overcoming difficulties in other environments can contribute to persistence and competitiveness. -Enjoyment of variety – goalkeeping provides constantly changing scenarios, which may be more engaging than repetitive activities. With that comes the more challenging side (for some) Potential difficulties: -Maintaining concentration during periods when the goalkeeper has little involvement.

Elliott has ADHD he wasn’t diagnosed when he first started it wasn’t until the end of his first season but I learned myself how to deal with him during games he’s also learnt a lot himself it’s a constant learning curve and whenever he’s asked to help other teams out I always tell their coach he’s got it coz sometimes you don’t think he’s paying attention when he actually is
