NEW RELESE - PRESAVE
hi, I've been with TRE since 2022 and I'm happy to announce these years have paid off. Probably my best mix and master to date ... I finally finished “Send Someone”, which is scheduled for release on October 23rd. Pre-save / release link if you willin: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/thejrband/send-someone-2 I wrote and produced this song with the original idea coming from the movie "Once". What stuck with me was the connection between two musicians who both had unresolved relationships in their lives. Their romantic connection never really happens, but through music they form something meaningful and eventually created and recorded an album together. That became the starting point for the song, the idea that sometimes someone enters your life for a reason you don’t expect. Along with that, I interjected some of my own personal feelings about the past haunting me. So in a sense, it’s more of a heartfelt statement than “ear candy” lyrics. The track started with fingerpicked acoustic guitar and vocal and gradually grew into upright bass, mandolin, violin, and lap steel. Luke Cyrus Goetze (Germany) recorded the lap steel remotely and really added the perfect atmosphere I was looking for. Thanks to @Dane Holmes and Chris who offered feedback along the way.

My beat is clipping and I cannot figure out why
Hey, y'all. So I mixed my first beat on Reason and honestly, it'll be a minute before I go back to Pro Tools. The only thing is my beat is clipping and I cannot find out why. None of my meters are getting to the red. My peak meter gets yellow buy never reaches 0 db, even after I've added the master compressor. I even turned down the master fader to stay in the green WITH the master compressor off and it's still clipping. Initially, my bass synth was too flat. Then I thickened it up with parallel compression AND distortion which made it too thick. The clipping had to have started around that time, because when I deleted the parallel compression, that's when I noticed the clipping. And everything is clipping except my low end instruments. Even my keys are clipping and everything is well below 0 db. The mix is awesome except for that. I'm thinking it's the way I have some of the cables hooked up with this being the first time messing with flipping the rack around... but why wasn't I hearing it when the bass synth was flat? And why is EVERYTHING clipping except that synth and the kick? I used parallel channels on every track for my delays and style reverbs and at first, everything was fine except for the flat synth. I did do reverb sends for depth and dimension (which sounds amazing compared to what I was getting on Pro Tools). And that's another thing. I tried turning the sends down. Still clipping. I turned them all the way off. Still clipping. I know this is a long shot since you can't see the mix, but could simeone possibly help me out? I've reached out to support, but they take a minute sometimes. The other thing I was thinking is that maybe the file is corrupted. One time, I accidentally saved it while it was playing. It made the session crash, but it did save and I didn't notice anything at the time.

The most revealing test is whether the noise appears in an exported WAV. That immediately separates a mix/routing problem from a playback-buffer or audio-driver problem.

@Rick Sanders you could try exporting the distorted section one stem at a time to see what track or tracks are clean / distorted. Or as @Nick Allegro mentions muting one track at a time.
Fix-The-Mix Orchestral Edition
Not long ago, I posted on our YouTube channel asking what people wanted to see from Mastering.com The most liked comment? "Orchestral mixing mastering" And it's finally happening. Next week, we're hosting a special edition of our famous "Fix-The-Mix" Challenge, focusing on music with orchestration. We're partnering with Orchestral Tools to bring you three days of live mixing, where Kevin "Black Pearl" McCloskey will be mixing a track with orchestral components from start to finish. We'll also breakdown the composition itself at the start of day one (composed by our very own Luke Despain). RSVP for free here (starts Sep 15th): https://courses.mastering.com/events/e/fix-the-mix-sep-2026?utm_source=Skool See you there, Rob

Just in time !! I have been contacted to record a local high school band. Not a full orchestra but I'm sure I'll pick up some pointers.
Something to ponder
Is it me or my gear? Countless recordings and live performances have used SM57 / SM58 $100 If you can't get a respectable capture into one of those mics. It's not the mic. Headphones -- unless someone is paying you 'I can retire now' money. You probably just need some basic cans. $200 Monitors -- Don't fall for the YT vids. Learn the monitors you can afford. I have heard killer mixes that were done on 6x9 speakers a guy ripped out of a car. He was a real musician / engineer. He had passion. 'All input devices (preamps - Audio interface) are the same'. Kinda. These days the cheap stuff is so good that if you don't push it most can't tell the difference. The thing is if you want character you want to push the pre so the expensive stuff wins. BUT .. you can go clean and then distort in the box. So... is it you? or your gear? Guitar finger squeaks ... I'm sure there is a plugin for that but TomoFugitaMusic can fix that for you. You won't like the discipline and neither did John Mayer. So what is my point? The best advice I have ever gotten, and it always seems to come from many respectable professionals. Stop spending money until you have something that you know for a fact will make a difference OR you are building a collection OR money is simply not an issue in your scenario. The thing you buy, even though considered better, might make you sound worse. Why? because you put a better mic in your less than adequate room because the new guitar amp is super responsive and your technique is inadequate because -- and this could be an expensive good thing -- oh, I thought I was ok but I have work to do. The ENTIRE WORLD is awaiting your new music that is raw, real, and creates an emotional experience for them.

I don't purchase anything without heavy research and the logic behind it has to have a solid reason to support it. But when I do make the purchase I make sure that its a quality one within my budget.

@Ari Tiainen I guess beauty is in the eye, or in this case, the ear of the beholder. 😂
