When it all clicks you'll be so grateful to know this fretboard "hack". I always loved being able to easily move up the guitar neck using a chord shape I already knew. So in this video I'm discussing just that, using my D chord finger shape to make a melody and practice my strumming. Then using the E chord shape to do the same thing. Make a melody with that shape and just run it up and down the neck while strumming. If you're not familiar with these shapes, no big deal. This way of thinking isn't, and shouldn't be, the end all, be all way to make a song, however, it can be incredibly useful for helping to start or finish an idea. The benefit of learning music theory is taking the guess work out of writing. When I first started playing guitar, the thought of writing a song was so foreign to me. I couldn't understand how someone could just pull a song from the ether. I would spend hours just playing chords against themselves, trying to find something that sounded good together, and it worked. Of course it worked, music is a numbers game, and you will inevitably find something that works together, but its so much easier when you know WHY it works. No more guessing, just decision making (and admittedly, that's tough too haha!).
