As a goalkeeper do you want to command your box, stay on the front foot, and feel confident using your feet? Take inspiration from the 80s/90s school playground and bring back the rush goalie into your training. Modern keepers need to act as an extra outfield player. Here is a simple practice setup we are running tonight to push our keeper higher up the pitch: The Setup: Play a 4v4 small-sided game with your goalkeeper in one of the goals, making that team effectively 5v4. The Rule: The goalkeeper must play outside the 18-yard box during open play, acting as an outfield outlet and joining the buildup. The Challenge: They can only retreat back into the box to make a save or claim a cross when the opposition attacks. Why it works: It forces a high-mentality mindset, builds comfort in possession under pressure, and sharpens transition speed—all while keeping the gloves on so they remember their primary job! Have you ever used rush goalie in your training sessions? Let me know how it goes! I will let you all you how G finds it
