Misogi. I first heard this term while reading the book The Comfort Crisis, which I haven’t finished yet. It’s an ancient Japanese tradition where once a year people would get into cold water and meditate, “cleansing” their soul. Modern day misogi is you pick something that scares you, that you have a 50% chance of not finishing, and that you won’t die. Mine is the upcoming ultra. I haven’t ever done more than a half marathon. I’ve been training for this for almost a year. But still feels like not enough. So many people have done a lot of these. The nice thing is your misogi is YOUR hard thing. So if a 5k is your hard thing, do it. If climbing a mountain is the thing, go conquer it. Once you conquer something you thought was impossible, your perspective gets reset. Get comfortable getting uncomfortable and let’s kick some ass!
