Drugs. Drink. Shopping. Work. The gym. Relationships. Approval. Always chasing the next thing.
Not every habit is an addiction. The consequences aren’t the same either.
But look at how often we reach for something to change how we feel, knowing full well it’ll cost us later. One more purchase.
One more hour at the laptop.
The message to someone we should have left alone.
The drink to shut the head off.
Here’s how I see it. We’re electricity and chemicals. Thoughts and emotions. When the chemicals feel wrong, we go looking for something to fix them fast.
For me it was heroin, then methadone. The damage was real. So was the work to rebuild my life.
So ask yourself one question:
What am I getting from this, and what’s it costing me?
Relief. Comfort. Connection. Five minutes away from your own thoughts. Answer that honestly and you’ve got somewhere to start. Find another way to meet the same need.
I’m not judging you. I’ve been there. Just look at the pattern.
What do you reach for when life gets uncomfortable?
