Business Casual used to basically mean sport coat, dress shirt no tie. Today this definition is incredibly nebulous since the vast majority of guys are not wearing ties these days. I believe the key to developing a suitable personal style of business casual involves three things 1) be aware of your environment. The three Fs Antonio speaks about Fit, Fabric and Function all apply here but the main focus is Function. In other words based upon the venue and culture at the event-what one wears when and where to a specific function should be understood by every gentleman attending. 2) intentionality. Be Intentional with your ensemble. For me simply not wearing a tie to the luncheon I attended today might be enough to be business casual-but to me, showing up with a blue OCBD or point color dress shirt, Navy blazer, and grey slacks would feel like I simply ran out of the house and forgot to put on a tie. Consequently to go to a community Luncheon my wife puts on at our church each month then returning to the house to complete paper work -felt like a perfect day to go Business casual. With temps slipping back up to the low 90’s I grabbed a brushed cotton burgundy blazer Orvis duck cloth khaki jeans-cut trousers, Orvis cut and sewn shirt, silk P Square to tie in the colors of the pants and burgundy coat , Indiana Jones Alden Boots and my Borealis dive watch. 3) Consistency, Each of us differ based upon our respective personal style and career. When @Richard Pollock wears a Chambray blue shirt with chinos or jeans that in my line of work too might be too casual to be even be business casual. Contrastingly for Richard, when he is going out on sites his ensemble may be comparatively the same as me wearing a three piece suit if attending a meeting with a group of trust attorneys and a client. He is dressed in his full armor like I and a coat and tie am dressed in mine. (Maybe adding a sports coat over his great Chambray shirt is better comparison to my trust attorney example🤷🏻). The details are less important than the consistency. Richard’s customers and guys he interacts with have become used to him looking sharp and from what I gather when he orders his company logo gear, and chooses classic fabrics, he is possibly the best dressed guy in his meetings. (9 out of 10 times I am as well for my meetings). Point is. Each of us are in our respective business attire. It’s how we interact in our roles-not the garments themselves. So to reiterate his professional attire differs from mine but serves the same function and each of us are pretty consistent. So for me today’s outfit for a business /community luncheon is pretty casual based upon how folks consistently see me through out the day-day after day. (I still had a few million dollars of clients assets in that room😉). This is the consistency part.

I picked up several items from the tailor last night. In trying them on, I recognized that the level of fit across items is really starting to come together. Two items I picked up were new MTO/MTM trousers from Proper Cloth. I have a few of their dress shirts but heard good reviews on their other tailored items so I wanted to give them a go given that they had a Labor Day sale. I got a pair of stone (off-white) chinos and light gray wool slacks. The fit on these were great, except that the legs were too short. However, they left plenty of extra fabric, so the tailor had lots of extra fabric to bring down the break, even for a pair with a cuff included from Proper Cloth. I also added suspender buttons to both slacks, which was an odd item to not allow me to select when ordering from Proper Cloth. The fabric in the gray trousers is a rich weave in both texture and shade. I have included a close up of the fabric. Although the fabric is the biggest variant for overall cost, the total cost for their MTO/MTM trousers during the sale with VBC tropical fresco wool was just under $300. The fit and feel belay that price point. • Sports Jacket — BOJ-012 (Haspel): A lightweight tan-and-cream cotton seersucker jacket with mid-gray accents, partial lining, notched lapels, and a two-button front. The breathable texture provides structure without excessive warmth and anchors the light, summery palette. • Shirt — DS-051 (Savile Row Company): A blue-and-white puppytooth cotton Winchester shirt with white cutaway collar, French cuffs, and cream buttons. Tagged 16–35.5 after sleeve alteration; it uses 2.5-inch collar stays. • Undershirt — US-003 (Pro Club): A heavyweight white cotton crew-neck undershirt in XL with a roomy fit and near-elbow sleeves. Its opacity provides a clean foundation beneath the patterned shirt. • Trousers — SL-028 (Proper Cloth): Made-to-measure light-gray VBC tropical-fresco wool trousers with inward pleats, side tabs, and 1.25-inch cuffs. The open weave and matte finish complement the seersucker jacket while remaining comfortable in warm weather.

One of the fun parts of traveling is occasionally finding something that earns a place in the regular rotation once you get home. Today I’m wearing a couple of things I picked up in Charleston last weekend from Ben Silver — this new quarter-zip and the socks. The sweater felt perfect for this time of year. Ben Silver is a store I bumped into while wandering the streets. But coincidently our sartorial guru @Brian McGuire had mentioned his waiting for the new Ben Silver catalog and it dawned on me, that I remember him mentioning Ben silver in other posts several months earlier, so maybe it wasn't a coincidence and just subliminal peer pressure that brought me to the store! 😜. Either way I am happy I went and picked up a couple of items that I know I will love and get many years of use out of. It is cool enough in the morning now that I want a layer, but we are still in that in-between season where I do not need anything too heavy. So today I paired it with tan trousers, a white shirt, and brown suede shoes, and let the coral color do most of the work. Then there are the socks. A little pattern, a little texture, and just enough personality without shouting for attention. Those are often my favorite details anyway. I enjoy bringing something home from a trip that reminds me of where I found it, but more importantly, I like when it actually fits into the life and wardrobe I already have. Otherwise it is just a souvenir. And with fall starting to settle in, I am very happy to have another sweater joining the rotation. Hope everyone has a wonderful Thursday!! 😎
