What's the right age to give your child a phone? I know most of are American parents, but I'm an African parent. I give my daughter a phone last year on her 13th birthday, but an incident happened that is trending on social media that made me question myself if I did the right thing. I control her phone and she doesn't use it during school days since she's in boarding. A15 years old boy groomed a younger girl of 8years into having phone s..e..x. This happened through Snapchat. He told the little girl that if she didn't do what he said, he would go to their house as ghost and hurt her and her mom. The girl tried to tell him that God will punish her for doing such act, but this boy kept on convincing her that it was okay. She is young, but she knows God. Somehow, she agreed to do what he told her and she even sent him photos and he also send her his nudes. I feel sick just writing this. How often do you check your child's phone? Have you taught them about grooming, manipulation, inappropriate messages, strangers online, sexual exploitation, and what to do when someone makes them uncomfortable. And most importantly, we need to teach them that, “If anyone asks you for a sexual picture, threatens you, scares you, or tells you to keep a secret from your parents, come to me immediately. You will not be punished for telling me.” That's how her innocence has been exposed to world, with the incident spreading across media. What a nightmare for the parents! Though I restricted certain apps from daughter's phone, but I'm still terrified when such incidents happen.
