I spoke with NYS finance department last week and I was told the enhanced star benefit will now be automatic for seniors starting next year. They do a two year look back IE depending on what you made in 2024 you could apply for this benefit in 2026. The automatic enrollment starts in 2027 so the look back is the 2025 tax year

My Daughter is an adult with Down Syndrome. She receives her own SSA benefits, but since I retired in 2020 she has also collected from my benefits. Talking to SSA on the phone, not sure where she was located, it was not our fault and should be "reconsidered" with a form SSA-561.There was a calculation error, we are told from our local office, that resulted in a $20,000 overpayment. We did that once, when this first came up in December of 2024, never heard a response until the end of July 2025 when another letter came demanding money. No explanation or response from our original appeal. That's the 40,000 ft view, but really not much more relevant facts to present. Should I get an attorney? I today's political climate what are my odds of this just going away? We have an appointment with the local office - who did the calculation wrong - in a couple weeks. Not sure if they have any incentive to fix this for us. Thanks for any direction! Kevin

I called Senator Schumer office and I was told about his floor speech and strongly worded letter in defense of protecting social security and Medicare and my response was a floor speech and a strongly worded letter is not legislation and then I asked what concrete legislation are you working on to save social security from being cut. So if your rep tells you about floor speeches or letter remind them that is not actual legislation to prevent benefits from being cut.

She responded via email: she is supporting the Social Security Expansion Act to remove the cap, expand the benefits across the board for current and new beneficiaries, increase cost of living adjustment and ensure the program is fully funded for the next 75 years.
